Howler at the hustings
06/06/2017 08:36:00

If you managed to attend the Croydon BID/Croydon Advertiser hustings last week you'll have seen me and the other Croydon Central candidates answering questions from members of the public about a wide variety of issues.

If you didn't, you can watch most of the debate on the Croydon Advertiser's Facebook page (the wifi went down so sadly only part of it is available).

There was one exchange between me and Jeremy Corbyn's candidate in particular that I wanted to draw to your attention - one that impacts thousands of people across Shirley and New Addington.

We were responding to a question from a member of the audience: "I'd like to know what the panel thinks about the Council's plans to build on Metropolitan Open Land in places such as New Addington and Shirley?"

You can watch the clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_-t9AwleJk

"I don't think we should be building on Metropolitan Open Land and green land."

When it was pointed out that our Labour Council is planning to do just that, she said: "No it's not."

As you can probably tell, I was a little taken aback. Just a few days earlier, I had spent the morning giving evidence to the independent inspector who is considering these plans alongside local Residents' Associations.

The land around Shirley Oaks Village is currently designated as Metropolitan Open Land; Croydon Council is planning to remove that designation and allocate some of it for housing. Likewise Rowdown Fields in New Addington is designated as Green Belt; Croydon Council is planning to remove it from the Green Belt and build a secondary school on it.

For Jeremy Corbyn’s candidate to claim none of this is happening was frankly bizarre. If you want to check the facts for yourself rather than taking my word for it, you can find the relevant documents on my site.

There are only two explanations. Either she doesn’t know about one of the biggest issues in the constituency or she was trying to avoid answering a difficult question by telling a porkie.

Either way, is that the kind of person you want as your Member of Parliament?
