The Times backs my Mental Health Discrimination Bill
11/02/2013 09:36:00

Today is the Third Reading of my Mental Health Discrimination Bill in the House of Lords - if it clears this final hurdle, then it goes to the Queen for Royal Assent before becoming an Act of Parliament.

The Times newspaper has an editorial about the significance of the Bill today, that you can read online(£).

I have just been called to do jury service and rejected as I am on anti-depressants.I am disappointed not to be able to take part in such an important aspect of society, to which I feel I have much to contribute as a thoughtful, educated and intelligent person. Surely, as one in four of the population suffer from depression each year, there must be many people who are as yet undiagnosed with mild or even severe depression or other more serious mental conditions who complete jury service and do not need to prove their suitablilty to do so.

I do understand the need to be careful for many reasons, including the benefit of the juror his or herself, but feel that a person who has suffered from depression in the past and is still on medication but is totally functional and stable could offer much as a juror and may even have greater insight into some cases a juror may encounter.

Congratulations on the bill going through the third reading yesterday. I look forward to being able to contact the jury service with a view to being reinstated as a practising member of society once it has been made law.

Many thanks for you good work,

Jo Dodds (Mrs)
