Government gives Croydon more funding than anywhere else in the country to fund new school places
06/03/2013 17:00:00

On Friday, the Department for Education announced that Croydon will receive over £63.2 million pounds over the next two years to fund new school places, significantly more than any other council in the country.

I’ve written before about why Croydon is experiencing a school places crisis, so needless to say I’m delighted that my lobbying behind the scenes has paid off. Not only is this good news for parents of young children who will want to send their child to a local school, it is also good news for other services – the Council had been faced with the prospect of spending nearly all its capital budget on schools and now that it is getting more than it expected from the Government, it should have a bit more for other priorities like resurfacing our roads or renovating the Fairfield Halls.

PS. This story perfectly illustrates one of Barwell’s laws of politics, which is that oppositions will always find something to criticise. I see from The Croydon Advertiser's coverage that Croydon Labour Party have welcomed the news but said that the Government should meet the cost of all the new school places required. Nevermind the fact that when it comes to Council services there is a long-established principle that the Government provides some help but expects the Council to provide some money too. Nor the fact that despite the cuts in revenue spending this Government has increased capital spending compared with what Labour were planning. Nor the fact that we are spending more during a period of austerity on new school places than Labour did during the last Parliament. Nor the fact that we have been given more money than any other council in the country. As far as Labour councillors are concerned, this can’t be good news because they’re not running the Government...
