Gavin Barwell MP opens the first new business In North End Mall

Date Filed:  Monday, December 17, 2012

Chai Corner marks a successful re-launch in North End Mall following closure of Allders Croydon.

Following the closure of its Chair Corner concession in Allders Basement in September 2012, Angel Catering (UK) Ltd was pleased to host guests to their re-opening ceremony on Friday 14 December in the newly named 'North End Mall'.

Chai Corner - a relaxed environment, surrounded in which to enjoy different varieties of tea while sampling a variety of Indian tapas or a complete authentic Indian meal - was opened initially in Allders in September 2010.

With the support of Croydon Council, their landlord Delancey Minerva and the goodwill of the local community, Angel Catering (UK) Ltd has been able to secure a new unit in North End Mall, re-invested in the Chai Corner concept and is now open for business.

The new Chai Corner, positioned in the only walk-way from George Street to North End, enjoys a street-life ambiance with a massive footfall of passing shoppers, workers and commuters from East Croydon station. As a result the concept has been enhanced to provide customers with Indian Street Food dishes, freshly prepared in the kitchen re-constructed in the new unit.

On cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony, Gavin Barwell MP said: "It is great ot see that the North End Mall has survived as a result of the ingenuity of the North End Mall Association and that small businesses, such as Angel Catering (UK) Ltd, have the entrepreneurial spirit to play their part in the continued regeneration of Croydon Town Centre".

Councillor Mike Fisher, leader of Croydon Council, spoke at the event and said: "It is an exciting time for Croydon, with so much interest from two of the largest and most successful retail operators in the world, Westfield and Hammersons, demonstrating the potential in our town. Knowing also that small businesses, such as Chai Corner, are investing and surviving is a great sign of a successful future for
Croydon’.

Faisal Khan, Chairman of Angel Catering (UK) Ltd, said: "It is an occasion for celebrating ordinary people coming together to overcome the deep concerns of the Allders closure and creating something new that was almost inconceivable just two months ago. It is also a time of thankfulness to John Rouse, CEO of Croydon Council who worked tirelessly with the landlord and Administrators to make North End Mall happen".

He added: "I am extremely proud of our employees for working diligently with a “never say die attitude”, despite all the insecurity, so that our vision for an Indian Street Food operation in North End Mall could come to reality".
